sampler-cultureclash is an international collective of dj’s, embroiderers, sound artists, textile designers, dancers, spoken word artists, curators and graffiti artists. Together we are exploring the connections between textiles and sound and the cultures of embroidery and dj-ing using the common word “sampler” as the starting point for investigation. Our philosophy is to explore sampling as a creative process and to create social spaces where a diverse range of people can come together to meet, to share, to play, to learn, to generate new ideas, to perform, to make collectively and to have fun.
The collective includes Jason Singh (beatboxer and music producer), Berit Greinke (textile designer and machine hacker), Yusra Warsama (actress and performance poet), and members of the Embroiderers Guild and the New Embroidery Group.
Over the last three year we have collaborated with a wide range of people and organisations including the V&A; Textile Study Group; Draw Down the Walls, Belfast and Leitrim Design House in Ireland; Textile Futures Research Centre @ University of the Arts, London; Ele Carpenter and Open Source Embroidery; The Centre for Advanced Textiles @NTU; FutureEverything Festival 2011 and students from Manchester Met. University.
The project has been supported by the Crafts Council’s Spark Plug Curators’ Scheme, and the British Council’s Creative Collaboration Programme to develop partnerships in south east europe.
